Out of the Mystic Past
Out of the Mystic Pastby Fritz White (www.fritzwhite.net) is the highlight of Loveland’s Benson Sculpture Park, home of Loveland High Plains Arts Council’s Sculpture in the Park (www.sculptureinthepark.org) for nearly 28 years. My family has been involved with the show for nearly as many years and has the responsibility of caring for the planting bed around Out of the Mystic Past in honor of our late friend, Fritz.
The rock garden surrounding this beautifully haunting piece was neglected for several years and had become overgrown with Artemisia. Once the Artemisia was removed I added natives and other regionally appropriate plants in order to provide four seasons of interest, low-water and maintenance requirements, as well as an attractive stop for birds, butterflies and pollinators in the park. The wildflowers, vibrant colors, and wide variety of textures complement the artwork and its surrounding locally quarried stone base. Some of the plants included are: Mary Ann Haecock Dwarf Ponderosa Pine, Saskatoon Serviceberry, Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine, Pawnee Buttes Western Sandcherry, Little Bluestem, Mexican Hat Prairie Coneflower, and Larkspur.
